Midvalley Express

The Midvalley Express, Route 50X, is a seven-mile Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project connecting West Valley Central Station to Murray Central Station in Salt Lake County, Utah, with connections to FrontRunner and TRAX. The route connected local destinations and planned developments across Murray, Taylorsville, and West Valley City, and included 15 stations. The route began service on April 12, 2026, and offers zero fare through April 2029. The project cost $109,637,257 and came in under budget, funded through a combination of federal, state, and land donation sources, including a Federal Transit Administration grant and additional financial support from the state of Utah and other local partners. 

Need 

This new BRT system further connected the cities of Murray, Taylorsville, and West Valley City, UT, and provided a needed stop at the growing Salt Lake Community College. With rising populations and new communities being built in the area, the route operated at 15-minute intervals and provided a needed alternative mode of transportation for the congested corridor. By improving transit accessibility, frequency, and visibility, UTA enhanced the local economy by connecting riders to regional destinations and planned developments. 

Work 

• Constructed a transit center on a five-acre land parcel at Salt Lake Community College 
• Built 1.4 miles of exclusive bus lanes 
• Constructed 15 new station locations, including 25 individual stations 
• Built three center stations 
• Installed utilities, communications, retaining walls, and privacy walls 
• Extended the North Jordan Canal culvert 
• Constructed culvert extension for nearby canal providing water to Kennecott mine.  

Coordination  
 
The MVX interfaced with a college, the state transportation agency, three cities, three water departments, and two power departments, requiring close coordination and collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure project directives were met.
