About the Project

As part of the Potomac Interceptor (PI) Sewer Restoration Project, this consists of the rehabilitation of the existing E-line Sanitary Sewer at Washington Dulles International Airport. The line conveys roughly 60 million gallons per day of wastewater from Washington Dulles International Airport and local communities to the Potomac Pumping Station in Washington D.C.

Close coordination with airport personnel is required throughout all active work performed. To minimize disruption, work is being conducted in eight carefully planned stages.

Need

The PI was constructed in the 1960s, and, if not renewed, extensive RCP deterioration could result in environmental damage. Rehabilitation methods will avoid, minimize, and mitigate potential environmental impacts from the restoration efforts.

Work

  • Removal of approximately 3,800 lf of existing sanitary sewer pipe and associated existing manholes.
  • Construction of 3,800 lf of new 36"-diameter PVC sanitary sewer pipes on existing alignment.
  • Approximately 5,000 lf new 36"-diameter PVC sanitary sewer pipes on a new alignment.
  • New concrete sanitary sewer manholes, including invert shaping, ladders, frames and covers and concrete housekeeping pads.
  • New asphalt roadway pavement.
  • New concrete airfield taxiway pavement and associated asphalt shoulder pavements over utility trenches.
  • site restoration
